chapter 3

I think I would love to have her job....visiting schools for a week and focusing on the positives, energizing the students. And she has time to read for pleasure! Ha, but seriously, most teachers I know are already so very busy. Yes, I agree that in a perfect world this would be great, but the reality is that the classroom teacher today is so busy outside of class already. The math program and the reading program in our district require so much planning and preparation to make them work. I'm not even in the classroom right now, and I am skeptical about the time commitment she is asking of educators. I know it would be wonderful for us to have continuous education and conference time with the other teachers in the school, and I know this IS what we should strive for. Once again, I must say how much I admire teachers and the time and effort they put in to be successful, and to help their students learn. And I agree with her when she says we must be protective of the limited time we have, and put children and teachers first, and paperwork second. Also, I agree that technology must be used wisely, and I am grateful that we are in a district where we have access to this, and where teacher education does have a priority.
I was surprised to read in this chapter that research does not support ability grouping. Does this mean with middle and high aged students school too?
And I agree that communication is key, especially establishing positive communication before any other may be needed. Relationships are so important, and do affect our success as teachers. And yes, thank you to our principals, who surely don't have time to read for pleasure!! All kidding aside, teachers really deserve to be paid a lot more!
